Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

Our topic for this term (Summer 1) is 'The Time Machine'. We will be focusing on the story The Princess and the Friendly Dragon. The story is about a princess who is captured by a mean ogre and locked away in a tall tower, luckily a friendly dragon flies past and saves the princess from the tower! Please take a look at the curriculum map to see all the wonderful things we will be learning!

During today's science session, Tuesday 19th April, we planted our own plants! We put a broad bean seed into a clear pot, so we can see it start to germinate, with soil and water. We then found a good place in the sun to help them start to grow! We will keep you posted on our growing bean plant!

During today's Science lesson, Monday 18th April, we were focusing on looking at different wild plants. Take a look at the wild plants we found, we remembered to take care around those stinging nettles!

Special Guest

On Friday 15th April, we were lucky enough to have John Noble, an Olympic torch bearer, visit Highgate School. We had lots of fun finding out his story and even having a go at holding the torch!

In Science this week, we have started looking at different plants. Our focus for the lesson was to find different types of garden plants we have around the school. One of the garden plants that we found was Rhubarb. We were then lucky enough to taste our school grown Rhubarb. Some of us loved the taste and some of us did not like the taste! Take a look at the pictures of us tasting Rhubarb and see if you can guess who liked it and who disliked it :) !

Take a look at us retelling our new story, The Princess and the Dragon, with actions to help us remember the story.

For our last week before a well deserved Christmas break, we looked at the story Stick Man by Julia Donaldson. The story follows the journey of a stick man trying to find his way back home to his family tree. After doing some fantastic writing about the story, we got to enjoy a school trip based around this lovely story. Take a look at the fun (and very muddy!!) day we had at Beaumanor Hall!

We used a range of materials to create these beautiful paintings inspired by Bonfire night.

On Tuesday 10th of November the whole school celebrated Diwali- take a look at the fantastic Diwali dancing we did!
