Year 2

Down in the Woods

Summer Term

This term our new topic is 'Down in the Woods'. Have a look at our curriculum map below to see what we will be learning!

 

Year 2 had a fantastic day on our school trip to the Thinktank museum in Birmingham. Have a look at our photos to see what we did!

Today Year 2 have been creating repeated patterns. We went outside on the playground and gathered some different natural objects to arrange in a pattern.

 

                                 

 

                                

 

                                

 

                                

 

                                

Year 2 have been making gingerbread houses!

 

First we followed instructions to make our gingerbread houses in a group.

 

                

 

                

 

                

 

                                    

 

Then we designed and labelled our own gingerbread houses, thinking about which sweets we could use for different parts of the house!

 

             

 

            

 

                                  

 

Finally we used our designs to decorate our gingerbread houses with lots of different sweets!

 

               

 

                  

 

                                      

    

 

As part of our topic we are learning the story 'Hansel and Gretel'. Today we learnt some actions for the story and did some drama to help us remember the story!

 

First we acted the story out as a whole class:

 

            

 

Then we performed the story in groups so that we all had a chance to play each character:

 

              

 

             

 

 

Today, Year 2 learnt the song 'In the Hairy Scary Castle'. They practiced singing the song, then they thought about what instruments they could use to make the sounds in the castle!

Van Gogh Sunflowers

We have learnt about the life of Vincent Van Gogh and looked at some of his famous paintings.

 

Today we created our own 'Sunflowers' picture using paints, pastels and tissue paper.

 

First we sketched our sunflowers, then we chose which materials we wanted to use.

 

             

      

           

 

           

 

           

 

             

    

           

 

                     

Planting Seeds

Today Year 2 have been planting sunflower seeds! We took our seeds outside into the courtyard and worked in groups to plant our seeds and water them before we took them inside and put them on a windowsill so that they get plenty of sunlight!

               

 

               

       

                                     

 

Then we went inside and sequenced instructions for 'How to Grow a Plant' in partners.

 

                 

 

                  

David Hockney

As part of our 'Down in the Woods' topic, we have been looking at the art of David Hockney.


We went outside and took our own photos of the woods, then we practiced sketching our pictures with Mrs Smith.

  

 

Today we looked at a David Hockney picture called 'Arrival of Spring'.

Little Red Riding Hood

As part of our new topic we are learning the story 'Little Red Riding Hood'. Today we learnt the story and did some drama to act out the story.

 

First we acted out the story as a whole class:

 

 

 

 

Then we got into groups of 3 and took turns to play the different characters of Little Red Riding Hood, the wolf and the woodcutter:

 

    

 

    

 

  

 

  

 

Finally, we acted out our performances to the rest of the class:

 

  

 

Around the World

This term our topic is called 'Around the World'. Look at our topic map to find out what we will be learning about. 

We spent some time looking at the globe. After that we looked at some flat maps and made our own. We carefully traced our own maps and then painted the continents in different colours.

In computing we have been learning about algorithms.

First, we made sure that some algorithms were in the right order so that they could be followed.

    

 

    

 

    

 

 

Then we had a go at creating our own algorithms to give directions to a partner! Next we improved our algorithms to make sure that they could be followed.
